Mallorca will receive a total of €113.8 million from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) for the period 2026-2027, aimed at supporting strategic projects that focus on environmental preservation, historical and cultural heritage recovery, water management improvements, and the renewal of public infrastructure and services. This allocation represents 63.88% of the resources earmarked for the island under the Annual Ordinary Plan of the ITS, excluding cross-regional initiatives related to responsible tourism and the fight against illegal tourism offers.
The funding will facilitate the development of 33 projects initiated by the Consell de Mallorca and local municipalities, alongside 17 regional initiatives expected to positively impact the island, particularly in areas such as water management, biodiversity conservation, sustainable mobility, and tourism quality. The aim is to ensure that the income generated from tourism translates into tangible improvements for the territory, public services, and the well-being of residents, while also enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
Focus on heritage and landscape preservation
Among the 33 projects, seven are led by the Consell de Mallorca, primarily focusing on the recovery and conservation of historical and cultural heritage, the promotion of natural heritage, and landscape preservation. Notable initiatives include an investment of €1.4 million for the intervention at the Fàbrica Nova in Sóller and over €1.5 million for the recovery of the early Christian site of Son Fadrinet in Campos. Another significant project involves the rehabilitation of the Church of Our Lady of Solitude, with an investment of €1.5 million, aimed at preserving the island's architectural and cultural heritage.
The ITS funds will also support the ongoing development of the digitalisation project for heritage routes in the Serra de Tramuntana, known as GEORUTAS, with over €1.3 million allocated. This initiative aims to enhance the interpretation and dissemination of heritage while facilitating new ways to explore the territory. Additionally, the Consell's project list includes plans for two housing units in the GESA settlement in Aucanada and active management for the conservation of the mosaic landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana, with an investment of €1.8 million.
Municipal projects to enhance public services
The municipalities of Mallorca will implement 26 projects across 13 localities, including Alaró, Calviá, Estellencs, Montuïri, Muro, Palma, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santa Margalida, Selva, Ses Salines, Son Servera, Vilafranca de Bonany, and Llucmajor. These initiatives address the specific needs of each municipality but share a common goal: to improve infrastructure and public services, restore degraded areas, protect the environment, and promote a more sustainable development model.
A significant portion of the municipal projects focuses on the renewal of drinking water and sewage networks, water efficiency, and the modernisation of basic services. Key projects include the renewal of water networks and improvement of hydraulic services in Alaró, the enhancement of drinking water and sewage networks in the Ses Fotges area of Muro, and the replacement of water networks in Selva. Additionally, Son Servera will see the installation of remote-reading water meters to improve water cycle efficiency.
Other initiatives include the modernisation of the integral water cycle and sustainable urban transformation in Son Bauló, Santa Margalida, and the establishment of a drinking water treatment station and a plant to remove nitrates in Vilafranca de Bonany. These efforts will be complemented by sustainable urban renewal projects in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar and the Colonia de San Jordi in Ses Salines, enhancing local streets and municipal services.
This reinvestment of over €113 million reflects a commitment to ensuring that tourism activity generates shared benefits for both residents and visitors, underpinned by a model of responsibility, sustainability, quality, and respect for Mallorca's identity.
