Museo industrial y de la memoria obrera in sagunto attracts over 1,000 visitors in first two weeks

The Museo Industrial y de la Memoria Obrera in Puerto de Sagunto opened its doors on 15 October 2026. From 16 to 31 October, excluding the opening day, the museum recorded 1,002 visitors, according to the 2026 activity report from the Fundació de la Comunitat Valenciana de Patrimoni Industrial i Memòria Obrera de Port de Sagunt.

Local visitors made up the majority, with 832 attendees, representing 83% of the total. National visitors numbered 86 (8.6%), while international guests accounted for 84 (8.4%), indicating that nearly one in six visitors came from outside the local area, totalling 170 people (17%). This figure includes attendees to the museum and its temporary exhibitions and reflects just over two weeks of operation.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 14:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 16:00 to 19:00. Admission is free until 31 December 2026. It is housed in the former Nave Almacén de Efectos y Repuestos, located at Calle Fundición, 80, a building constructed in 1927 by the Compañía Siderúrgica del Mediterráneo for storing machinery parts and matrices.

The permanent exhibition spans three floors, showcasing the history of the steel industry, the factory city, and working-class memory, featuring machinery, tools, photographs, documents, and audiovisual testimonies.

Natalia Antonino, the councillor for cultural and industrial heritage, expressed her enthusiasm: "The fact that over a thousand people have visited the museum in just two weeks shows that the community has embraced it from day one. This space holds the memory of those who built our city around the steel industry, and seeing it full is the best proof that this history remains alive."

Acting mayor María José Carrera added: "This museum is a city project that recognises several generations of workers. We are proud of the warm reception it has received and grateful for the excellent work being done by the Fundació to ensure the museum thrives with a vibrant and inclusive programme."

To celebrate the opening, the Fundació has organised cultural activities for the last quarter of the year. Two temporary exhibitions, running until 4 April 2027, focus on the social movements that arose around the closure of the Port de Sagunt steelworks in 1984, featuring photography and photojournalism: “La Batalla de Sagunto: lucha social y fotoperiodismo” and “Los tiempos del Puerto” by Argentine photographer Jorge Sáenz, showcasing images from 1983 and 1984.

On 24 October, the museum and Horno Alto nº2 hosted a contemporary sound and audiovisual creation event featuring installations, interventions, and performances by twelve local and Valencia-based artists and collectives. Following this, on Saturday, 7 November, Horno Alto nº2 will present “La producción del resto,” an interactive sound installation by Santiago López and Vic Pereiró, resulting from their artistic residency in spring 2026. The installation will be open for public viewing from 11:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 19:30, concluding with a live performance by the group Morte Morte, alongside the project artists.

This event is organised by Pausa Zulú and the Museo Industrial y de la Memoria Obrera de Puerto de Sagunto, in collaboration with the Youth and Childhood Department of Sagunto City Council. Interested individuals can register for guided tours lasting 20 minutes for small groups via Eventbrite, with slots available from 10:00 to 12:00.

All these activities are made possible through the collaboration of Sagunto City Council and the Conselleria de Educación, Cultura y Universidades of the Generalitat Valenciana, to whom the Fundació expresses its gratitude for their support and commitment to the industrial heritage and working-class memory of Puerto de Sagunto.
