Algeciras is set to host two significant events in November to honour the renowned flamenco singer José el de la Tomasa. The Palma de Plata 'Ciudad de Algeciras', one of Spain's most prestigious flamenco awards, will dedicate its 34th edition to him.
The preliminary event will take place on Friday, November 6, at 8 PM at the Centro de Interpretación Paco de Lucía, with access by invitation until capacity is reached. The programme will commence with an illustrated discussion titled 'El lenguaje del cante', led by Chemi López from La Droguería Music. Following the discussion, there will be a performance featuring Manuel Moneo 'Barullo', Domingo Rubichi, Jesús Moneo, and 'El Aóño' Carpio.
The main gala is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, at 8:30 PM at the Teatro Florida, where the award will be presented to José el de la Tomasa. The gala will feature performances by his grandson Manuel de la Tomasa, Rafael El Lele, and the dancer Concha Vargas. Guitarists Salvador Gutiérrez, Manuel Cerpa, Fran de Algeciras, and Curro Vargas will provide musical accompaniment, while Manuel Moneo, Quini de Jerez, Juanelo, Manuel Soler, and Guille Campos will contribute with singing and clapping.
The event will be presented by journalist and flamenco critic Manuel Martín Martín. Pilar Pintor, the first deputy mayor and cultural delegate, unveiled the posters for the 34th edition of the Palma de Plata alongside Carlos Vargas, president of the Sociedad del Cante Grande. This organisation, in collaboration with the City Council, promotes this recognition, which was revived in 2011 and has become a key highlight of the city's cultural programme, helping to preserve flamenco tradition and the legacy of Paco de Lucía.
Details regarding ticket availability for the gala on November 21 will be announced by the City Council in due course.
