The local government of Madrid has officially designated a square in Villa de Vallecas to honour the late actor Tomás Zori. The square, located at the intersection of Calle Real de Arganda and Calle de Enrique García Álvarez, will now bear his name in recognition of his significant contributions to the arts and his deep ties to the district.
Born in Vallecas in 1925, Zori maintained a lifelong connection to the area, often expressing pride in his roots. He gained fame as a member of the renowned comedy trio Zori, Santos y Codeso, which became one of the most celebrated acts in Spanish entertainment during the mid-20th century. Over the decades, Zori performed in numerous theatres across Spain, solidifying his status as a key figure in Spanish comedy and theatrical arts.
The vice mayor and municipal spokesperson, Inma Sanz, announced the decision during a press conference following the government meeting. She highlighted Zori's belief that culture and comedy serve as vital tools for fostering community and connection among people. His artistic legacy is characterised by values of closeness, respect, and a commitment to serving the public, always guided by the principle that laughter transcends political divides.
Tomás Zori Delgado passed away in 2002, but his influence on Spanish performing arts continues to resonate, making this tribute a fitting recognition of his enduring impact.
