The Feroz Awards 2027 programming continues in November at the Faculty of Communication with a series titled "Rompendo el canon" (Breaking the Canon), showcasing films by female directors that defy traditional stereotypes associated with women in cinema.

Organised by the Concello de Pontevedra in collaboration with the Association of Cinematographic Informers of Spain (AICE) and the University of Vigo (UVigo), this initiative has a strong feminist focus, coinciding with the commemoration of 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The November schedule includes a discussion with costume designer Clara Bilbao, a three-time Goya Award winner, as part of the activities surrounding Debut, a fashion show featuring projects from students of the Master's in Design and Creative Direction in Fashion.

According to the organisers, the programme is dedicated to films created by women that break away from the stereotypes of the perfect victim, the good mother, or the compliant woman, exploring genres such as thriller, horror, and grotesque comedy.

Film screenings and discussions

The series will kick off on Friday, 6 November, with a screening of "Cerdita" (Piggy), directed by Carlota Pereda. This film subverts the cinematic cliché of the final girl and stylised victim, focusing on an overweight teenager caught in a cycle of bullying, navigating between fear and a thirst for bloody revenge.

On Monday, 9 November, "Creatura" will be screened. This film, which won the Best European Film award at the 2023 Cannes Directors' Fortnight and received three Feroz nominations, explores the taboo of female sexual desire and body shame from childhood, directed by Elena Martín Gimeno.

Friday, 20 November, will feature "O corno" (The Horn), a film by Jaione Camborda that won the Golden Shell at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2023. It is described as a direct and honest portrayal that advocates for women's rights to make decisions about their own bodies.

Finally, on Monday, 23 November, Ainhoa Rodríguez's "Destello Bravío" (Brave Glimmer) will be shown, which challenges the stereotype of the mature, docile, invisible, and asexual woman in rural settings, featuring a cast of real women from an Extremaduran village. Each screening will be followed by a discussion with the respective filmmaker.

Admission to these four screenings is free, with tickets available from the Tourism Office starting seven days before each event. Prior to this series, the Faculty of Communication will host the final two marathons of the October programming, dedicated to the series "Paquita Salas" and "Cardo".

Masterclass with Clara Bilbao

In addition to the film series, the November programme includes a masterclass on the role of costume designer, to be held on Monday, 16 November, led by Clara Bilbao. This session, moderated by Lola Dopico, the coordinator of the Master's programme, will delve into Bilbao's over 30 years of experience in costume design, including her work on films such as "La sombra de la ley" (The Shadow of the Law), "Nadie quiere la noche" (Nobody Wants the Night), and "Blackthorn: Sin Destino" (Blackthorn: Without Destination). In 2024, she directed the feature film "Tratamos demasiado bien a las mujeres" (We Treat Women Too Well).
