Ribadeo and Xunta sign agreement to rehabilitate Casa Maseda as a tourism office

The Ribadeo Council and the Xunta de Galicia have formalised an agreement to rehabilitate Casa Maseda, a historic building that will be transformed into a tourism office and a point of assistance for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, a famous pilgrimage route in Spain.

Mayor Dani Vega announced the signing of the agreement, stating, “Today we signed the agreement with the Xunta for Turismo de Galicia to finance 100% of the works on Casa Maseda. When we took office, this building was in a state of disrepair, and we decided to expropriate it and convert it into a public space with two main objectives: a tourism office and a point of assistance for pilgrims.”

Vega highlighted the strategic location of Casa Maseda, which is situated along the Camino route, emphasising its role in providing support and information to pilgrims as well as promoting Ribadeo and Galicia as a whole. “Ribadeo is the gateway to this community, and we believe it is essential for the Xunta to have a space to showcase Galicia Calidade,” he added.

The mayor expressed gratitude for the financial support from the Galician government, stating, “We appreciate that the Xunta de Galicia is funding 100% of these works, amounting to €880,000, meaning the Council will not have to contribute financially, only to draft the project, which we have already submitted.”

Vega noted the importance of collaboration with the Xunta, stating, “This is a very positive development. Transforming a dilapidated building into a rehabilitated space dedicated to promoting Galicia and Ribadeo, while also supporting the Camino de Santiago, is crucial.”

He also acknowledged the contributions of various officials, including the Director General of Tourism, Xosé Merelles, and the President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, for their commitment to the project. “We must continue working and managing budgets to ensure Ribadeo keeps progressing,” Vega concluded.

Marta Saiz, the Councillor for Tourism, expressed her enthusiasm for the agreement, stating, “This is fantastic news for Ribadeo. As a councillor, I am very happy and proud, but as a resident of Ribadeo, I am even more so. Tourism offices are vital points of contact for visitors, and the establishment of a modern, accessible, and intelligent office in Casa Maseda, located on the Northern Camino, is a source of pride for all of us.”

The agreement was signed by Mayor Dani Vega and Xosé Merelles, the Director of Tourism for Galicia, in front of Casa Maseda. The event was attended by councillors for Tourism, Culture, and Safety, as well as the councillor for Works.
