Televisión Canaria's programme 'Identidades' received the National Ondas Television Award for 'best local content' on 3 November 2026. This recognition was announced by the jury during the 73rd edition of the Ondas Awards, which honour exceptional contributions in radio, television, podcasts, advertising, and music.
A total of 29 awards and four special mentions were presented after evaluating 1,065 entries from 26 countries. Notably, journalist Gemma Nierga, a four-time Ondas winner, announced the results, and the awards ceremony is scheduled for 26 November at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
Established in 1954, the Ondas Awards are presented annually by Promotora de Informaciones S.A. through Cadena SER, aiming to recognise the quality and popularity of productions, as well as professional trajectories in radio, television, music, and advertising. These awards are among the oldest and most internationally recognised in Spain's communication sector.
César Toledo, the general manager of Radiotelevisión Canaria, stated that the award “recognises a new way of telling the story of the Canary Islands and rewards a television that is more ours than ever.” He emphasised that the programme “bridges generations” and explores the culture, landscape, language, symbols, and music of the islands.
'Identidades', directed by Benito Cabrera and Raúl Pulido, is a documentary series that offers a contemporary perspective on the culture, history, and heritage of the Canary Islands. Presented by Cabrera alongside Elena Marrero and Luis Cabrera, the programme aims to connect Canary Island culture with younger generations.
Benito Cabrera remarked that this award is an “important recognition at a national level” and highlighted that it represents “a way to tell the story of the Canary Islands from its roots, without clichés.” Paco Chinea, representing Multitrack, expressed gratitude for the award on behalf of the entire 'Identidades' team and acknowledged Benito Cabrera's contributions.
