Xunta de Galicia allocates €132.3 million to enhance tourism competitiveness in 2027

The Xunta de Galicia has announced a budget of €132.3 million for 2027, aimed at boosting the competitiveness of the region's tourism sector. This represents an increase of €6.39 million, or nearly 5%, compared to 2026. The director of Tourism of Galicia, Xosé Merelles, presented the budget during a session of the Galician Parliament, highlighting the government's commitment to modernising the industry and promoting a balanced distribution of economic benefits across the territory.

Focus on modernisation and sustainability

The 2027 budget is designed to consolidate Galicia as a competitive, modern, and sustainable tourist destination. Merelles emphasised the importance of technological modernisation, enhancing the competitiveness of local businesses, and improving the offerings of local resources. Key initiatives include support for municipalities and the celebration of the Xacobeo 2027, a significant cultural and religious event that attracts pilgrims from around the world.

Targeting higher-spending visitors

The Xunta aims to attract visitors with higher purchasing power by developing new products related to wine tourism and premium experiences. Merelles noted that despite the absence of European funds from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism in 2027, the tourism sector has shown resilience, with 5.7 million visitors recorded until September, resulting in €394.5 million in revenue—an increase of 7.4% compared to the same period in 2025.

Investment in infrastructure and local initiatives

The budget includes €5 million to support local councils in improving tourism infrastructure and resources. This funding will facilitate projects focused on universal accessibility, mobility, waste management, and energy efficiency. The Xunta also plans to support smaller municipalities and initiatives that enhance the visitor experience while preserving the quality of life for residents.

Promoting new tourism products

Galicia's tourism strategy for 2027 prioritises the development of unique and high-end experiences, particularly in wine tourism and gastronomy. A significant portion of the budget, €35 million, will be allocated to promoting the Xacobeo 2027, with an increase in international marketing funding from €13 million to €16 million. This enhancement aims to intensify promotional campaigns and collaborations with strategic markets and operators.

Investment in the Xacobeo 2027

The Xacobeo 2027 will play a crucial role in the budget, with a total allocation of €96.67 million. This includes €9 million for the Ultreia Xacobeo Fund, which channels contributions from sponsoring companies towards cultural, musical, and promotional activities. Additional funds are earmarked for maintaining the pilgrimage routes and sustainable projects related to historical heritage.

Merelles concluded that the 2027 budget is designed to strengthen the region's tourism capabilities, modernise businesses, and enhance local infrastructure. He stated, "These accounts are for investment, organisation, training, promotion, and conservation, supporting both businesses and local communities while reinforcing Galicia's international position."
