Xunta invests in public housing expansion in Vigo

Alfonso Rueda, the president of the Xunta de Galicia, has emphasised that Vigo is the Galician city where the regional government is constructing the most public housing. Currently, nearly 1,000 homes are underway in the San Paio de Navia neighbourhood, with a total investment of €260 million aimed at addressing the significant issue of housing shortages.

During a visit to two ongoing projects that will provide 84 public housing units in San Paio de Navia, Rueda stated that these homes are expected to be completed in the early months of next year. He reiterated the Xunta's commitment to doubling the public residential stock by 2028, aiming to reach 8,000 properties. This goal includes the construction of 4,000 new public homes, a target that has already been surpassed, with 4,670 public housing units currently in progress. Of these, 2,100 were tendered in the first nine months of this year, while another 1,860 are already under construction.

In San Paio de Navia specifically, Rueda noted that the construction of 1,600 public and protected homes is planned, with 927 already in progress. He highlighted that Vigo is currently the city where the most public housing is being built.

Looking ahead, the Xunta has allocated €96 million in the 2027 budget for housing policies in Vigo, marking the largest investment in a Galician city. Rueda stated that this funding is essential to meet existing commitments and to continue future developments.

Rueda also expressed gratitude to the construction sector in Galicia for their efforts in achieving this ambitious goal, particularly during challenging times concerning workforce availability, supplies, and construction timelines.

In addition, the Xunta is implementing two Projects of Autonomous Interest (PIA) to build approximately 3,400 additional homes, mostly protected, in the city, specifically in the Ofimático and Ramón Nieto areas. Rueda stressed the importance of providing legal security to property owners and the need for collaboration between administrations on such a crucial issue as housing. He also announced a new aid programme, funded with €7 million, to encourage municipalities to develop public housing directly, with support from the Xunta for each unit constructed.
