Xunta supports 'Transfronteriza' exhibition to recover memory between Galicia and Portugal

El director de Turismo de Galicia, Xosé Merelles, attended the opening of the 'Transfronteriza' exhibition at the Museo do Pobo Galego, which will remain open to the public until 28 March 2027. The exhibition is based on the documentary 'Mujeres de la raya' by the same artist, Diana Gonçalves, and is the result of three years of research.

Through cinematic language, documentary materials, historical archives, and heritage elements, the exhibition creates an experience centred around the shared memory between Galicia and northern Portugal. Specifically, 'Transfronteriza' recovers the memories of women who lived along the border between the two regions in the mid-20th century, highlighting their crucial roles in cross-border trade and the economic survival of their families.

In this context, Merelles emphasised the importance of initiatives like this to "highlight the cross-border identity and the associated cultural and tourist resources of the river Miño and the historical communities on both banks." He also noted the significant contribution of cultural proposals like this to "boost tourism and attract diverse audiences," encouraging visitors to "explore the cities where these exhibitions are held" and discover their heritage and cultural offerings.

In 2025, cultural tourism attracted around 825,000 visitors to Galicia, generating over 4.1 million overnight stays, which accounted for 10.7% of the total. The expenditure associated with this type of tourism reached €460 million, with an average daily spend of €111.7 per person, compared to the national average of €65.9.
