‘Atra bilis’, a dark comedy by Hilo Producciones, is set to be the latest offering in the ‘La Cultura a escena’ cycle organised by the Government of Cantabria. The performance will take place on Saturday, 31 October, at the Teatro Vimenor in Vioño, starting at 19:30.
This theatrical production is based on a work by Laila Ripoll and features four women who reveal their own miseries, fears, and desires through humour. The story unfolds in a stormy night at the wake of Nazaria Alba Montenegro's husband, where four elderly women, filled with resentment and bitterness, gather.
The setting is ripe for conversation, leading to the emergence of memories, heartbreaks, secrets, and hidden grudges, all set against the backdrop of thunder. Throughout the night, themes of hatred, secrets, and desires come to light, ranging from the tragic to the absurd, including the murder of a baby and the death of a cat, as well as infidelities from decades past and recent betrayals.
‘Atra bilis’ is described as a farce that blends elements of grotesque carnival and demonic spectral grotesque, creating vividly monstrous characters in a spectral environment that seems to herald an impending apocalypse.
