Barbón highlights the significance of the princess of asturias awards

The president of the Principality of Asturias, Adrián Barbón, has emphasised the importance of the Princess of Asturias Awards as a symbol of "all positive values". He stated, "In a world where individualism is rampant, and it seems we are losing the value of the common good, these awards advocate precisely the opposite."

Barbón praised Patti Smith, the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Arts recipient, for her advocacy of democracy and her call for citizens to exercise their voting rights to uphold this political model. He expressed his admiration for her words, noting, "I was amazed by her statements, clearly expressing her shame regarding the administration of her country, the United States, and urging people to mobilise their votes for change."

The president also mentioned Leo Messi, who has been awarded the Sports Prize, highlighting the immense excitement surrounding his presence in the Asturian capital. "He is undoubtedly a legendary figure in football, and this must be acknowledged openly," Barbón remarked, adding that Messi serves as "a reference" in the world of sports. He noted, "It is thrilling to witness the calibre of the awardees and the enthusiasm they are generating, as we have seen in the streets in recent days."

Prior to the awards ceremony, scheduled for this afternoon at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, Barbón attended audiences held by the royal family for the personalities and institutions honoured on Asturias Day 2026, as well as those who will receive the Princess of Asturias Awards later today.
