The Casa de la Cultura in La Línea is currently hosting the ‘IX Jornadas de Fotografía de Naturaleza del Campo de Gibraltar’, an exhibition featuring 71 photographs showcasing the region's diverse flora and fauna. Organised by the environmental association ‘Nuestras Raíces’ from Los Barrios, in collaboration with the municipal delegation of Culture, the exhibition opened today and will be available for public viewing until 20 November.
The inauguration was attended by several local dignitaries, including the mayor, Juan Franco, and the councillor for Culture and Environment, Raquel Ñeco. During the opening, Ñeco highlighted the collective nature of the initiative and the significant participation it has garnered. She noted that the exhibition includes images of birds, reptiles, insects, and flowers, and has attracted considerable interest, particularly from educational institutions. “It provides a way to experience the diversity of our natural surroundings in a closed space,” she stated.
Antonio Benítez, representing the ‘Nuestras Raíces’ association, expressed gratitude for the annual support from the Ayuntamiento (City Council) and explained that the association’s goal is to promote awareness of the region's biodiversity. He clarified that the exhibition is not a competition; instead, all prizes are drawn from among the participants, serving as a meeting point for nature photographers in the Campo de Gibraltar.
Mayor Juan Franco commended the Culture and Environment department for their efforts and acknowledged the contributions of municipal workers and the association. He praised the quality of the exhibition, describing it as “impressively beautiful, particularly showcasing the spectacular biodiversity of our region.”
Additionally, Franco announced that the Ayuntamiento is working on a future nature classroom at Parque Princesa Sofía. “We are currently drafting the project for this initiative. The initial outline did not meet my expectations, and we are committed to creating a more ambitious space,” he explained, adding that the facility will be situated in a 16-hectare green area, a vital green lung in the city centre, and in a location directly opposite Gibraltar.
