Cecilia Pérez takes office as government delegate in Asturias

Cecilia Pérez Sánchez has officially taken office as the government delegate in the autonomous community of Asturias following her appointment published in the Official State Gazette on 21 October. During the ceremony, she expressed her commitment to serving both Asturias and Spain, stating, "I assume the role with responsibility and a firm commitment to public service."

The event was marked by a reduced institutional presence due to ongoing electoral restrictions and as a sign of condolence for a recent train accident in Urda, Toledo. Attendees included the President of the Government of Asturias, Adrián Barbón; the former delegate, Adriana Lastra; military authorities; representatives from the State Security Forces and Corps; as well as officials from the General State Administration in Asturias and the Government Delegation itself.

As the government delegate in Asturias, Pérez represents the national government in the region and oversees the Delegation's operations. Her responsibilities include promoting, coordinating, and supervising the actions of the General State Administration and its public bodies in Asturias, fostering collaboration with the Principality of Asturias and local entities.

Additionally, she plays a crucial role in territorial coordination, providing information on government actions, enhancing citizen engagement, and ensuring the protection of rights and freedoms within the legal framework.

Cecilia Pérez was appointed by Royal Decree 866/2026 on 20 October. She holds a diploma in Business Sciences and a degree in Business Administration and Management. Her professional background includes roles as a business advisor from 1986 to 2000, a councillor in El Franco from 1995 to 1999, and mayor during two terms: from 1999 to 2000 and from 2003 until her recent appointment. She has also served as president of the Asturian Federation of Councils (FACC) since 2019, vice president of the Territorial Council of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces from 2019 to 2023, and held various positions in local development and fishing organisations since 2006.
