Conference on Isidre Fontana and his commitment to educational reform in Reus

On 28 October at 19:00, the Municipal Archive of Reus will host a conference titled "Isidre Fontana, teacher and municipal councillor for the POUM", led by Salvador Palomar. This event is part of the series "On the street. Revolution and war in 1936", organised by Carrutxa, the Municipal Archive of Reus, and the Baix Camp Regional Archive.

Palomar will explore the life of Isidre Fontana Ivern (1913-1938), a dedicated educator from Reus who was passionate about educational reform. He focused on child development through the study of their drawings, promoted new educational trends, and advocated for the quality of rural schools. Fontana taught in various towns, including Falset. As a member of the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (POUM), he served on the Municipal Council of Reus in 1936, where he took on responsibilities in education, culture, and sports, and directed the Joaquim Maurín school.

In 1937, he went to the front as part of the Cultural Militias. He died in November 1938 under circumstances that remain unclear. This talk aims to recover the memory of a teacher committed to transforming education and society, while delving into his journey within the revolutionary and wartime context of 1936.

The series "On the street. Revolution and war in 1936" seeks to engage the public with this historical period through the personal experiences and daily lives of its protagonists. It will conclude on 4 October with a conference titled "The first months of the war in the towns of the Camp", presented by Axel Baiget.
