The Diputación de Ciudad Real is backing the inaugural Provincial Amateur Theatre Meeting, Calderón, a cultural initiative set to bring together four theatre companies from the province in Moral de Calatrava. This event, which runs from 30 October to 8 November, celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Cultural Group Teatro Calderón and aims to create a shared celebration with the public while providing a new platform for promoting local amateur theatre.
Organised by the Cultural Group Teatro Calderón in collaboration with the Moral de Calatrava Town Hall and financially supported by the Diputación Provincial de Ciudad Real, the event will be held at the Municipal Auditorium, which has a capacity of 365 seats. Over four days, the stage will host performances across various genres, including comedy, family theatre, tragedy, and adaptations of classic works, showcasing the quality and diversity of theatrical productions in the province.
The provincial institution's support is channelled through the Moral de Calatrava Town Hall and aligns with its commitment to cultural initiatives that invigorate municipal activities, encourage citizen participation, and highlight the work of amateur theatre groups.
This meeting also serves to acknowledge the 35-year journey of the Cultural Group Teatro Calderón, which has been integral to the cultural life of Moral de Calatrava. To commemorate its anniversary, the group has invited other provincial companies to participate, presenting four productions that have received awards and nominations at various theatre competitions.
The programme kicks off on 30 October at 20:00 with a performance of “Un enemigo del pueblo” by La Teatrería from Torralba de Calatrava. This adaptation by Juan Mayorga of the well-known play was nominated at the XXXV Provincial Theatre Showcase. On 31 October, also at 20:00, Tarambana Teatro from Piedrabuena will present “No me cuentes cuentos”, a family-oriented production that won the award for best children's performance at the XXXIV Provincial Theatre Showcase.
The following week, on 7 November at 20:00, Crea Escena from Manzanares will perform “Indómita”, a tragedy inspired by the classic conflict between Antigone and Creon, which received the second prize at the XXXIII Provincial Theatre Showcase and has garnered other national accolades. The event will conclude on 8 November at 20:00 with “La moza de cántaro” by Citra Teatro from Tomelloso. This classic comedy has been awarded second prize at the National Amateur Classical Theatre Competition “Luis Molina”, along with other national recognitions.
The first Provincial Amateur Theatre Meeting Calderón also aims to enhance the cultural offerings of Moral de Calatrava and attract audiences from neighbouring areas. Beyond its artistic dimension, the event is expected to boost the local economy, particularly in sectors such as hospitality, commerce, and services, by drawing visitors during the weekends of the programme.
Through this collaboration, the Diputación de Ciudad Real is supporting an initiative that values the work of amateur theatre groups, facilitates the exchange of cultural productions between municipalities, and promotes access to the performing arts in rural areas.
