The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, has announced that the Eiras reservoir is nearing its historic minimum water level, with current levels at 39.52%, a decrease of 2.71 points since last Tuesday. He stated that there is sufficient water supply guaranteed for only 38 days, with the reservoir projected to reach its lowest recorded level of 7.11 hectometres cubed on 2 November.
Caballero explained that if the maximum volume of the reservoir is depleted, there would still be enough water for an additional 57 days, extending to 22 January 2027, although this would raise concerns over water quality.
The mayor attributed the current water supply assurance to a new water treatment facility funded entirely by the Concello de Vigo. He also highlighted that the local government has been requesting the construction of a new reservoir from the regional government, Xunta, for the past 15 years. This ongoing issue has resulted in significant challenges for nearby Baiona, which has received water assistance from Vigo for 42 days.
