Exhibition on women's role in democracy to open in Cifuentes

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, in collaboration with the regional parliament, will bring the exhibition '50 years of shared democracy: Women and transition in Castilla-La Mancha' to the municipality of Cifuentes on 3 November. The exhibition is part of the commemorative programme '50 years Together', celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Spain's democratic transition.

Visitors will be able to view the exhibition at the Centro Cultural San Francisco in Cifuentes until 9 November. The display follows its previous showing at the Centro Social El Torreón in Sigüenza, where it was available until 2 November.

This exhibition highlights the significant role women played in the political and social changes that accompanied the establishment of democracy in Spain. It showcases their involvement in feminist movements, trade unions, and associations, as well as their participation in the first democratic institutions.

Featuring 20 panels with historical photographs, documents, and testimonies, the exhibition aims to recover the stories of women who contributed to the fight for rights and freedoms, many of whom were active in rural areas and community organisations. Notable references include the Asociación Independiente de Mujeres Alcarreñas, established in 1977, and pioneering figures such as Juana Quílez Martí and Teresa Brutón Viejo, who were instrumental in the women's associative movement in the province.

The exhibition is curated by Ángel Ramón del Valle Calzado from the University of Castilla-La Mancha and is part of a series of cultural and educational activities planned across various municipalities in the region to commemorate the Transition and to engage citizens with the history of democratic development in Castilla-La Mancha.
