valdepeñas is celebrating its first book fair this weekend, running from 16 to 18 October at Bodegas A7. The event aims to bring together authors and readers through a variety of activities designed for literature lovers and local creators.
Vanessa Irla, the deputy mayor for culture, attended the opening ceremony, which featured a speech by writer Fermina Cañaveras. Irla emphasised the significance of this gathering space for authors and readers, stating, “During the weekend, we have various activities, book signings, as well as the presentation of the book ‘La Lonja de la Seda’ by Juan Francisco Ferrándiz, among other events. Our goal is to unite readers with authors in this culturally rich environment.”
Cañaveras, originally from Torrenueva, was highlighted as a prominent figure in literature and research, known for works such as ‘La sonrisa rota’, ‘El baile de las que sobran’, and ‘El barracón de las mujeres’. She expressed her connection to Valdepeñas, where she studied at IES Bernardo Balbuena, and praised the initiative of the book fair, hoping it would become an annual event. “It is an exceptional idea and a gateway to culture. Valdepeñas is deeply connected to culture, and I hope we continue to celebrate literature here,” she remarked.
The book fair is organised by the Valdepeñas City Council, alongside local bookstores Amigos de Lorca, Juan Alcaide, Casa Drojan, and publishers Durii and Grupo Oretania, with the aim of creating a cultural space for all ages.
Highlights of the programme include a storytelling session called 'Maravillosos', scheduled for Saturday from 11:30 to 12:30, led by author María Márquez. The afternoon will feature local authors signing books from 19:00 to 21:00, including Juan Ignacio García Jaime, Juan Marín Madrid, and David Sarrión Torres. Additionally, the presentation of ‘La Lonja de la Seda’ will take place from 19:00 to 20:30, followed by a signing session with Ferrándiz. The day will conclude with the presentation of the Poetry Contest Awards.
On Sunday, a children's activity led by Lourdes Moncayo is set for 11:30. The Valdepeñas Book Fair will provide detailed information through its social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.
