Fuerteventura concludes ‘Memoria Viva 2025’ employment programme

A total of 17 unemployed individuals have participated in the restoration of heritage elements, museum spaces, and other historically significant locations on Fuerteventura. The Fuerteventura Island Council has officially concluded the ‘Memoria Viva 2025’ employment programme, which facilitated nearly thirty restoration projects in collaboration with the Museums of Fuerteventura.

Participants worked on various sites, including lighthouses at Jandía, Tostón, and La Entallada, the Cultural Heritage Complex of Ampuyenta, and windmills in areas such as Valles de Ortega, La Corte, and Villaverde. Additionally, efforts extended to historically valuable sites like the Unitary School of Tesjuate and the Wrestling Field of Casillas, among others. Restoration work also included ecclesiastical elements, such as the churches of Tuineje, Tetir, and Antigua, as well as other rural landmarks like the area surrounding Nuestra Señora de La Peña in Vega de Río Palmas.

This employment plan was co-financed by the Fuerteventura Island Council and the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN). Insular president Lola García emphasised the significance of employment programmes, stating, “We are clear about the importance of employment plans, which we direct towards public service actions demanded by the population.” She added that preserving and rehabilitating the island's heritage spaces is crucial, as they represent a major attraction for visitors and are a key part of the identity of Fuerteventura.

Nuria Cabrera, the councillor for Employment Development, noted that such programmes not only promote local employment but also target vulnerable populations facing greater challenges in the job market. She stated, “These initiatives aim to improve Fuerteventura in various areas, addressing the needs expressed by our citizens.”
