The Guàrdia Urbana of Tarragona, in collaboration with the city's heritage department, has successfully intervened in the auction of a historical piece potentially linked to the Casa Canals, a significant heritage site in the city.
The item in question is a 19th-century Isabeline chest of drawers, renowned for its elegance and craftsmanship, showcasing the high-quality materials typical of Spanish cabinetry from that era. Upon learning that a Barcelona auction house had listed the piece for sale, the Guàrdia Urbana's Basic Investigation Unit initiated an inquiry to ascertain its provenance and ensure its preservation.
Investigations revealed no evidence of criminal activity related to the piece, including any links to the looting of the noble house in the 1990s. Nevertheless, the efforts of the Basic Investigation Unit led to a temporary suspension of the auction to clarify the item's origins and assess its historical significance.
Subsequent inquiries confirmed the chest of drawers' connection to Casa Canals, one of Tarragona's most iconic heritage buildings. This information was relayed to the relevant municipal services, who deemed it essential to preserve the piece as part of the city's public heritage, resulting in its acquisition for €250.
This initiative underscores the Guàrdia Urbana's commitment to cultural heritage protection, extending its role beyond public safety to include the safeguarding of Tarragona's historical memory.
