The Ayuntamiento de Guadalajara has officially inaugurated the 2026-2027 academic year at the UNED (National University of Distance Education) centre in an event that brought together the university community of the province. The ceremony took place in the auditorium of the Centro San José, marking one of the most significant and heartfelt occasions for the local academic community.

Alfonso Esteban, the first deputy mayor, represented the mayor Ana Guarinos, who was unable to attend. During his speech, Esteban emphasised the UNED's role as a guarantor of equal opportunities in accessing knowledge. He stated, "If there is an institution that embodies the values of effort, perseverance, and equality of opportunity, it is the UNED."

Esteban praised the institution for demonstrating that it is never too late to learn and that personal circumstances should not become barriers to education. He highlighted the importance of continuous training in a society undergoing constant social, technological, and economic transformations. He noted that the UNED plays a crucial role not only in training professionals but also in fostering critical, prepared, and socially committed citizens, contributing to the generation of opportunities and the reduction of inequalities.

He further acknowledged the close connection between the UNED and the city of Guadalajara, describing it as an "essential ally" that extends beyond the university realm to actively engage in the cultural and social life of the municipality. Esteban also expressed gratitude on behalf of the Ayuntamiento to the centre's management, faculty, tutors, administrative staff, and all collaborating institutions that make this educational project possible.

One of the most emotional moments of the day was the presentation of scholarships and diplomas to students who completed their studies during the 2025-2026 academic year. Esteban congratulated the new graduates, stating that their dedication serves as "the best example for those who are starting a new phase today."

The inaugural lecture was delivered by María Laura García Bermejo, a doctor in Biology, researcher, and scientific director of the Ramón y Cajal Institute of Health Research (IRYCIS). Her career was recognised as a testament to the fundamental role that science and research play in societal progress. The ceremony concluded with the official proclamation of the new academic year by Jesús de Andrés Sanz, vice-rector of UNED's associated centres, and featured performances by the Turina Symphony Chorus, including the traditional "Gaudea."
