laboratory at the institute of research in heritage and humanities opens to the public

The laboratory at the Institute of Research in Heritage and Humanities (IPH) of the University of Zaragoza has launched a new phase by opening its services to the general public. Following its inauguration and presentation to the media, the IPH-LAB is now extending its specialised resources and knowledge not only to researchers within the institute but also to external entities, cultural heritage professionals, and interested individuals.

This opening represents an opportunity to strengthen the connection between the knowledge generated at the university and the needs of society. From now on, anyone can choose from a wide range of services aimed at the documentation, conservation, and dissemination of historical-artistic assets, cultural traditions, and other expressions of our collective memory.

Specialised technology for heritage

The IPH-LAB is equipped with technical facilities that address various research, documentation, and professional needs. Its infrastructure includes 3D scanners, photographic and photogrammetric cameras, a drone equipped with LiDAR sensors, a hyperspectral camera, a total station, and various systems for digitalisation and documentary reproduction.

These technologies provide opportunities for the digitalisation of books and documents, both printed and manuscript, as well as other flat materials of interest due to their age, rarity, or uniqueness, such as photographs, prints, drawings, and posters. In the three-dimensional realm, 3D graphic documentation allows for the creation of digital twins of movable and immovable assets, including sculptures, ceramics, archaeological sites, and caves, serving as a foundation for various heritage projects.

Additionally, the laboratory offers expert advice and specialised work for the study, interpretation, and dissemination of cultural heritage across its various domains. This includes the preparation of scientific-technical reports, authentication and valuation of pieces, collection cataloguing, and the design of specific language and communication programmes aimed at diverse population groups.

In this way, the IPH-LAB promotes the application of specialised methodologies to new projects and needs, reinforcing the institute's commitment to knowledge transfer and projecting its scientific and technical capabilities beyond the strictly academic sphere. Interested individuals can find information about the services, fees, and application procedures on the IPH website.
