The Garden of Historical Memory at the municipal cemetery of Pereiró is currently showcasing an exhibition that delves into the history of the civil cemetery, coinciding with the festivities of All Saints' Day. This garden serves as an open-air museum and is the primary memorial space for the victims of Francoist repression in Vigo.
Among those interred at the cemetery are notable figures from the city’s history, including Emilio Martínez Garrido, former mayor of Vigo; José Antela Conde, former mayor of Lavadores; Heraclio Botana, a socialist leader; and Ignacio Seoane, a physician and member of the Republican Left. The cemetery also contains graves of members from former foreign colonies, such as German and English nationals, alongside historical personalities like Concepción Arenal and Ricardo Mella.
The Garden of Historical Memory features significant elements, including a poem by local writer María do Carmo Kruckenberg, a plaque commemorating the Imperial German Navy, and a tribute to poet Carlos Oroza by singer-songwriter Luis Eduardo Aute, alongside graves of various families from different colonies.
The original layout of the Pereiró cemetery was designed by Jenaro de la Fuente, with its inauguration taking place in 1898. In 1975, the wall separating the civil cemetery from the religious one was demolished, and in 2009 it was officially renamed the “Garden of Historical Memory.”
Other municipal cemeteries are also hosting exhibitions, including “The bond of stone” at Lavadores and “The cemeteries of Vigo and their neighbourhoods” at Teis.
