Spanish government allocates €37 million for film production grants

The Spanish government has authorised the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) to issue selective grants for film production projects in 2027, amounting to €37 million. This initiative is designed to enhance the industrial framework of film companies, enabling them to strengthen their operations in a competitive market.

The specific aim of these grants is to support projects that hold significant cinematic, cultural, or social value, including documentary and experimental films, while also encouraging the involvement of new filmmakers. Special emphasis will be placed on increasing the production of audiovisual works that utilise innovative technologies, such as animation.

Another key objective is to address the gender gap in the industry by promoting the inclusion of women in creative and technical roles. The selective grants for film production will be awarded through a competitive selection process.

The maximum grant amount will not exceed €800,000 per project, or €1 million for animation projects. Additionally, at least 40% of the budget will be allocated to projects directed exclusively by women, with a minimum of 15% and a maximum of 25% for documentary projects, at least 10% for animation projects, a minimum of 5% for experimental projects, and at least 5% for co-productions with foreign companies where the Spanish participation is minority.
