Operation SHOWTIME leads to multiple arrests
On October 8, 2026, the Guardia Civil, in collaboration with Europol and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), announced the dismantling of a criminal organization allegedly involved in the supply, storage, and distribution of cocaine to other criminal groups. The operation, known as SHOWTIME, resulted in 20 arrests and 23 searches conducted in Barcelona, Lleida, Madrid, and Alicante.
During the raids, authorities seized nearly 52 kilograms of cocaine, 2.8 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1.8 kilograms of MDMA, and approximately €409,275 in cash. Additionally, 57 financial assets and properties valued at around €1.1 million were blocked.
Details of the criminal network
The investigation began in late May 2025 when the Guardia Civil became aware of a potential organization based in Barcelona that was supplying cocaine to other criminal groups in Catalonia and throughout Spain. The investigation revealed a clear division of roles within the organization, including drug procurement, transportation, storage, and delivery to buyers.
The alleged leader of the organization was responsible for setting prices, controlling deliveries, and negotiating terms for new shipments. He maintained control over distribution and payments by linking new supplies to the payment of previous ones.
Drug storage and distribution
The drug supply was reportedly sourced from Madrid, with transportation facilitated by vehicles equipped with hidden compartments. The organization primarily operated as a wholesaler, distributing vacuum-sealed packages of cocaine marked with logos. At least three distributors in Barcelona and a network in the Maresme region were identified as recipients of the drugs.
In Lleida, authorities found 5.74 kilograms of cocaine and €28,000 in a storage unit, while other quantities were located in two residential properties. The organization utilized six storage points—five homes and one storage unit—primarily in Barcelona and Lleida, to keep the drugs before distribution.
Evidence of money laundering
The investigation also uncovered indications of money laundering through bank accounts and assets registered under third parties to obscure the connection between the suspects and the profits from drug trafficking. The alleged leader had accounts, properties, and a vehicle registered in the names of family members, which he used.
International collaboration and judicial proceedings
Europol assisted in analyzing information and identifying suspects, while the DEA provided insights into some members of the organization. The detainees face charges related to public health offenses and membership in a criminal organization. The alleged leader is also charged with directing the organization and money laundering, while another member faces a charge of illegal possession of firearms.
Seventeen of the arrested individuals were brought before the judiciary, with 13, including the alleged leader, placed in provisional detention. The remaining four were subjected to travel restrictions. The investigation was conducted by the Judicial Police Section of the Guardia Civil in Catalonia, with support from various police units and specialized intervention teams.
