On 15 November, Toledo will host its inaugural Imperial Marathon, which has already attracted nearly 3,000 registered athletes, including participants from 23 different nationalities. Rubén Lozano, the city’s councillor for the environment, the Tagus River, and sports, emphasised the significant interest this sporting event is generating.
The marathon will feature the traditional distance of 42 kilometres and 195 metres, as well as a pairs category where two runners will share the distance, and an Ekiden format, allowing teams of four to complete the marathon collectively.
Lozano noted the event's international dimension, with athletes hailing from countries such as Canada, the United States, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Russia, alongside a strong representation from Europe, particularly British runners. He stated that these figures indicate that the Imperial Marathon is generating considerable interest beyond Toledo, presenting an opportunity to showcase the city as a venue for significant sporting events that can attract visitors and participants from around the globe.
He described the marathon as a long-awaited event for Toledo, which has been proposed for decades, and expressed the ambition for the city to host a top-level sporting occasion featuring elite athletes and substantial public participation.
The Imperial Marathon will also necessitate special traffic measures along the route to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth running of the event. Residents are advised to stay informed through municipal communications regarding any traffic disruptions and to plan their travel accordingly.
