The Xunta de Galicia is making strides in collaboration with European partners of NECSTouR to prepare for the upcoming annual General Assembly, which will be held in Santiago de Compostela in 2027, coinciding with the Xacobeo.
Recently, Turismo de Galicia participated in the NECSTouR Summit 2026, held on 22 and 23 October in the Finnish city of Kotka. This summit serves as a platform for collaboration among European regions to address the challenges of sustainable tourism and to advance preparations for the forthcoming annual event in Galicia.
This participation aligns with the Xunta de Galicia's strategy to promote a sustainable and competitive tourism model that contributes to heritage conservation, protects the identity of the territory, and ensures the equitable distribution of tourism benefits across the community.
Hosting the next assembly in Santiago de Compostela will provide an opportunity to enhance Galicia's presence in European tourism cooperation spaces and to share experiences related to sustainability and visitor management with other regions.
In this context, the Xunta is continuing to develop tools to better understand the tourism landscape in Galicia. Notable initiatives include the installation of sensors along various Xacobean routes to gather data on pilgrim traffic, and efforts to establish the Galicia Tourism Sustainability Observatory, aimed at providing insights into the sector's evolution.
NECSTouR is a European network of regions and organisations linked to tourism, promoting cooperation to advance towards more sustainable and competitive destinations. Galicia's participation facilitates knowledge exchange and experience sharing with other European territories, reinforcing the community's positioning in the realm of responsible tourism.
Thus, the Xunta is progressing with preparatory work to ensure that Santiago de Compostela hosts the next NECSTouR General Assembly during the Xacobeo 2027.
