The Lleida Provincial Tourism Board has unveiled the biosphere project to the alta ribagorça tourism sector. The event aimed to inform attendees that the Pyrenees and the Lleida region hold the Biosphere Gold Destination distinction. The board also offers the sector the opportunity to develop their own sustainability plans to achieve Biosphere certification.
Juli Alegre, the director of the board, emphasised that "this project aligns with our commitment to regenerative and sustainable tourism, as outlined in our Strategic Plan." He noted that over 260 businesses and organisations in the region have begun the process to obtain Biosphere certification, with 46 already certified and 162 committed to specific sustainability plans.
Furthermore, the tourism sector has recorded 3,041 actions and 5,556 activities related to sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Alegre also highlighted that the Alt Pirineu and Cadí-Moixeró natural parks have received the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST) distinction, allowing businesses within each park to join the initiative.
The event took place at the Outdoor Park in the Vall de Boí and was organised by the Vall de Boí Tourism Board and the alta ribagorça county council. It featured contributions from mayor Sònia Bruguera, county council president Albert Palacín, and biosphere consultant Anna Carbonell.
