Xunta launches third edition of Nélida Piñón short story prize to promote Galician literature

The Xunta de Galicia, alongside the Pontevedra Provincial Council, has unveiled the third edition of the Nélida Piñón Short Story Prize, a competition dedicated to celebrating the work of the renowned Galician author. This initiative seeks to foster literary creation in the Galician language.

During a recent meeting, José López Campos, the Conseller of Culture, Language and Youth, discussed collaborative efforts with Jorge Cubiela, the mayor of Cerdedo Cotobade, focusing on initiatives related to their respective departments. They both acknowledged the growing prestige of the prize, which has garnered attention for the high quality of manuscripts submitted in previous editions.

The inaugural edition in 2015 saw Xesús Castro Yáñez awarded for his story El viejo y el minotauro, while the most recent winner in 2018 was Daniel Asorey for his work Anatema. López Campos highlighted the importance of such competitions, stating that they serve as a "valuable tool to promote literary creation in our language, while also attracting more readers to our tongue." He also noted that supporting initiatives like this is part of the Plan for the Normalisation of the Galician Language.
