Alcoi has organised a peer mediation meeting to enhance coexistence and promote a culture of peace among its youth. The initiative, which took place on 15 October 2026, gathered over 150 participants, including students, educators, and local authorities.
The meeting featured a series of workshops and discussions aimed at equipping young people with the skills necessary for conflict resolution and effective communication. The event was part of a broader effort by the local government to address social issues and encourage a collaborative spirit among the younger generation.
The Mayor of Alcoi, Toni Francés, opened the event, emphasising the importance of fostering dialogue and understanding in the community. He stated, "Promoting a culture of peace is essential for the development of a harmonious society. We must empower our youth to become mediators and leaders in conflict resolution."
Javier Silvestre, Deputy Director of Research and Innovation at the Polytechnic University of Valencia's Alcoi Campus, also participated in the opening remarks. He highlighted the role of education in shaping a peaceful society and the need for collaboration between educational institutions and local authorities.
The event included practical workshops where participants engaged in role-playing scenarios to practice mediation techniques. This hands-on approach aimed to provide attendees with real-life skills that they can apply in their daily interactions.
In addition to the workshops, the meeting featured discussions on the importance of empathy and active listening in conflict resolution. Participants were encouraged to share their experiences and insights, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect.
The peer mediation meeting is part of Alcoi's ongoing commitment to promoting social cohesion and addressing the challenges faced by young people in the region. The local government plans to continue these initiatives to ensure that the values of peace and coexistence are instilled in future generations.
