Benalmádena to host Catrinas and Calaveras parade on 23 October

The Catrinas and Calaveras parade in Benalmádena is set to commence on 23 October at the Los Nadales Fairgrounds, offering a range of family-oriented activities. This cultural event is linked to the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead.

The festivities will kick off with a children's makeup workshop from 17:00 to 19:00, for which prior reservation is required via email at info@benalmadena.es. Following this, from 18:00 to 19:00, attendees can enjoy ‘Coco, the Musical’, a performance inspired by the Mexican celebration.

The parade itself will begin at 19:00, starting from the Los Nadales Fairgrounds and winding through San Miguel Street, Chorrillo Avenue, and Juan Luis Peralta Avenue, before concluding at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas. The procession will feature the Batukatá percussion group, live mariachi music from Tequila, and large figures inspired by traditional Day of the Dead characters.

Participants are encouraged to dress as Catrinas, Alebrijes, Monarch Butterflies, Adelitas, Marías, or other representative figures of the festival. After the parade, the traditional Altar de Muertos will be open to the public at the Felipe Orlando Pre-Columbian Museum, a key element of the celebration.

Organisers have also implemented accessibility measures for individuals with special needs or reduced mobility, who can reserve adapted spaces for both the show and the parade route by contacting info@benalmadena.es.

This event is part of the legacy of Felipe Orlando, the founder of the museum that bears his name, and highlights the involvement of the Mexican community residing in Benalmádena, which plays a significant role in celebrating this cultural tradition.
