The town hall of Chiclana has unveiled a new sculpture titled ‘Camaleón’ at its lateral entrance. The project, presented by the mayor of Chiclana, José María Román, is part of the Municipality Tourism grants (Munitur) and the Monumental Houses Route initiative.
The sculpture, which represents an investment of €42,020.11, was created by artist Chiqui Díaz, who began his artistic career in the late 1980s at his family’s bronze foundry. Díaz learned the techniques of casting and sculpture there, and his works, inspired by the movement and forms of animals and nature, can be found across Europe, Asia, and America.
Mayor Román emphasised that this sculpture is a testament to the municipal government's efforts to make Chiclana “more beautiful, attractive, and pleasant.” He noted, “Chiclana needed to have a chameleon represented, and it was not easy, but Chiqui Díaz has achieved it masterfully.” He also highlighted that this piece joins other works by Díaz, including those in the Plenary Hall and a lamp by Antonio Vela, both recently inaugurated at the town hall.
Chiqui Díaz expressed his gratitude for the support from the mayor and the town hall in realising this work, stating it is an honour to have a piece in such an iconic location as the town hall’s façade. He explained that the sculpture is made of stainless steel, ideal for capturing the movement of the chameleon, and he has named the work ‘Análisis de un instante’ (Analysis of a moment).
Díaz has two other works in Chiclana; earlier in 2023, he inaugurated ‘Homenaje a la espátula’ (Tribute to the spatula), a monumental piece commissioned by the town hall to welcome visitors at the roundabout in front of the Tartessus Shopping Centre on the Loma road. In the summer of 2022, he installed a unique weather vane featuring spatulas near the restaurant El Cuartel del Mar, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Limes Platalea project, funded by the town hall and in collaboration with the Cádiz Society of Natural History.
