Extremadura receives commemorative milestone for Camino Real de Guadalupe

Laureano León, the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports for the Junta de Extremadura, received a commemorative milestone today in Villar del Pedroso, presented by the Fray Hernando de Talavera Association on behalf of the municipalities along this historic route connecting Madrid to the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe.

This recognition underscores the importance of a pilgrimage route that has been in existence for over 600 years, linking the church of San Jerónimo el Real in Madrid with the monastery in Guadalupe, Cáceres, over a distance of 257 kilometres and passing through 33 municipalities in Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and the Community of Madrid.

The milestone, adorned with Talavera ceramics, symbolises the collaborative efforts of local, provincial, and regional administrations, as well as civil and religious entities, to recover, mark, and promote this historical path. Since its inception, the project has installed markers, beacons, and informative signs, incorporated artisanal ceramics into the urban centres of the municipalities, established seven public hostels, and facilitated over 200 group pilgrimages.

The initiative has received twelve awards for its contributions to heritage recovery and territorial promotion.

Recognition of cultural itinerary

During the event, Diego Hernández, president of the Fray Hernando Association, emphasised that the milestone's presentation recognises the work of the 33 municipalities and supports the promotion of the Camino Real de Guadalupe as a cultural, spiritual, and tourist resource.

Minister León highlighted the route's value as an element of identity, territorial cooperation, and sustainable development for Extremadura, which is home to the route's final destination: the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Camino Real de Guadalupe bears the legacy of pivotal figures in Spanish history, including the Catholic Monarchs, Charles V, Miguel de Cervantes, Saint Teresa of Jesus, and Miguel de Unamuno, as well as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. The delivery of this milestone reinforces the institutional commitment to the conservation, promotion, and internationalisation of a route that connects Madrid with Extremadura, which the Junta of Extremadura views as an opportunity to boost cultural tourism, rural development, and inter-territorial cooperation.
