Galician network of living crafts attracts nearly 400 participants in its inaugural edition

José López Campos, the Galician Minister of Culture, Language and Youth, visited Vilanova de Arousa today to attend a session organised by the Galician Federation of Artisan Redeiras, part of the Galician Network of Living Crafts. He was accompanied by the Director General of Youth, Lara Meneses, and celebrated the initiative's successful launch, which has attracted nearly 400 participants in its first edition.

During his visit, López Campos expressed gratitude for the commitment and effort of all the experts involved in the initiative, as well as the contributions of individuals over 55 who chose to share their cultural and heritage knowledge to help preserve traditional crafts. He stated, "These crafts are a fundamental pillar of our culture and an important resource for revitalising rural areas, showcasing to young people the vital opportunities available in these environments."

The pioneering intergenerational volunteering programme has been active since July, covering 25 Galician municipalities with the aim of valuing the knowledge of those aged over 55. The programme included expert participation in various crafts such as artisan work, pottery, net making, and the design and creation of items made from vegetable-tanned leather.

Today's session allowed participants to delve into the craft of redeiras, observing the processes of repairing and creating nets, trying their hand at basic techniques, and learning about the materials, tools, and main working methods. The event combined explanations with practical demonstrations and included a space for conversation and experience exchange regarding the professional journeys of redeiras, the changes the sector has undergone, current challenges, and the future of the occupation and generational transition.

The Galician Network of Living Crafts will conclude its first edition tomorrow with an event in San Cibrao das Viñas focused on jams and natural cosmetics.
