A public event titled ‘Towards the general strike for housing’ will take place in Santander on 4 November, aimed at discussing the upcoming general strike focused on housing issues. The meeting will gather representatives from various unions, social groups, and political organisations to explain the reasons behind the strike and encourage public support for the mobilisation scheduled for 11 November.
The event is set to begin at 19:30 at the Smolny Social Centre, located at Juan Antonio Gutiérrez de la Concha, 7, in Santander. Key speakers will include Rosa Mantecón, General Secretary of CCOO Cantabria; Valentín Fernández, Executive Secretary of UGT Cantabria; Carmen Martínez, representative of the Platform of Affected by Hermanos Calderón; and Israel Ruiz Salmón, Coordinator of Izquierda Unida Cantabria.
Participants will discuss the current housing situation and the reasons leading to the call for a general strike, which aims to defend the right to affordable and dignified housing. This issue is compounded by rising prices of essential goods and fuels. The discussion will highlight the impact of real estate speculation and the increasing cost of living on many working-class individuals, whose wages are insufficient to cope with the surging costs of housing, energy, and basic consumer products.
Furthermore, the meeting will explore the importance of collective responses to these challenges, emphasising the role of social and union mobilisations in bringing housing access to the forefront of public debate and political agendas, especially in a context where affordable housing is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.
