Jacobo Bergareche to present his book 'Tío grande' in Estepona

The town hall of Estepona has announced that on 4 November at 20:00, writer Jacobo Bergareche will present his latest book, 'Tío grande', during an event at the Biblioteca de Culturas Contemporáneas. Estepona's mayor, José María García Urbano, will also participate in the event.

This initiative is part of the library's project to bring contemporary literature closer to the public, fostering direct encounters between authors and readers.

Jacobo Bergareche, a prominent figure in contemporary Spanish narrative, is known for his exploration of human relationships, emotions, grief, memory, and the contradictions of everyday life, combining reflection with personal experience.

The presentation of 'Tío grande' will offer attendees a chance to delve into Bergareche's literary universe and engage in a conversation about his work and the themes that permeate his writing.

The event will take place on the sixth floor of the library and is free to attend until capacity is reached.

Synopsis of 'Tío grande'

Each year, Jacobo Bergareche organises a mus tournament in memory of his brother Roque. On the day of the event, while negotiating closing hours with Amadou, a young man in charge of the venue, he feels compelled to share the story of his brother, who was murdered in Africa. He hopes to move Amadou and extend the evening.

Amadou responds with his own story: that of a twelve-year-old boy who fled Guinea-Conakry with five friends in search of a better life in Europe. The journey lasted four years, with only two of them making it.

This encounter prompts Bergareche to travel with Amadou back to his village of origin, leading him to reflect on the circumstances of countless invisible migrants. From this experience, 'Tío grande' emerges, intertwining the story of his brother with Amadou's tale and other memories, creating an unexpected mirror of absence, danger, and hope.

The book addresses the unforeseen connections that can arise from pain and loss, as well as the power of stories to help us navigate grief.
