Mayor highlights historical significance of the Camino Real de Guadalupe in Villar del Pedroso

José Julián Gregorio, the mayor of Talavera, has underscored the "historical, cultural, and heritage" significance of the Camino Real de Guadalupe during a ceremony where a milestone was presented to the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Extremadura in Villar del Pedroso, a locality in Cáceres.

Gregorio stated that this initiative helps preserve "the shared history between Talavera, Guadalupe, and the municipalities linked to this route." He highlighted that the Camino Real de Guadalupe is "much more than a route; it is a connection between territories and a fundamental part of our identity," while also noting the historical ties between Talavera and Guadalupe.

The Talavera mayor congratulated the Fray Hernando Neighbourhood Association, particularly its president, Diego Hernández, for their commitment to the recovery, conservation, and dissemination of historical heritage. He remarked that events like this help preserve historical legacies and pass them on to future generations, in addition to contributing to "strengthening the bonds" between municipalities that share this tradition.

The milestone presentation coincides with the Holy Year of Guadalupe and also serves as an opportunity to enhance the visibility of the Camino Real, promote cultural tourism, and foster collaboration between Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura. In this regard, Gregorio reaffirmed the commitment of the Talavera City Council to support initiatives aimed at protecting heritage and strengthening relationships with municipalities connected by this shared history.

“Caring for our roots is building our future, because the most important paths not only connect places but also people and communities,” he added, referencing the ceramics of Talavera, which have been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO and adorn the milestones.

The event was attended by Laureano León, the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Junta de Extremadura; Óscar Fernández, the mayor of Villar del Pedroso; Feliciano Díaz, the mayor of Navatrasierra; Sonia Cid, the mayor of Carrascalejo; María del Rocío Castro, the mayor of Puente del Arzobispo; María Teresa Mayoral, the Deputy Mayor of Puente del Arzobispo; Diego Hernández, the president of the Fray Hernando Neighbourhood Association; and Benedicto García, the councillor for Urbanism.
