The municipal library of Piélagos in Mortera is set to kick off its first of three bibliotherapy workshops for seniors on 10 November. Carmen Bedoya, the councillor for culture, announced that the sessions are designed to encourage active ageing, stimulate memory and creativity, and enhance social participation through reading and cultural activities.
The scheduled activities include a reading club and discussion on 10 November, a themed card game called 'Palabras cántabras' on 17 November, and a bookmark-making workshop on 24 November. All sessions will take place at 17:00 and are free of charge, although prior registration is required due to limited spaces.
Registration can be completed in person at the municipal facilities located at number 10, Barrio de La Puntanía, by phone at 942 37 80 33, or via email at bibliotecamortera@pielagos.com.
On the first day, participants will engage in reading aloud from selected texts, focusing on stories from oral tradition, followed by discussions on the themes and dilemmas presented in these narratives. The following week, attendees will test their memory and knowledge through the personalised card game. The final session will involve creating bookmarks, which aims to enhance fine motor skills while fostering creativity.
Bedoya emphasised that these workshops are intended to provide a space for meeting, learning, and socialising, where literature serves as a tool to keep the mind active, share experiences, and strengthen social bonds.
