Ames council to invest over 1 million euros in sports facility upgrades

The council of Ames has approved the tender for the installation of a roof over the sports courts located in Milladoiro, situated on Travesía del Porto, next to the Casa de la Cultura and the sports pavilion. The project has a total execution budget of €1,113,382.77, including VAT.

This initiative aims to cover two existing sports courts in Milladoiro, thereby improving their functionality and adapting them to the needs of users regardless of weather conditions. The proposed solution involves a metal structure made up of porticos created from tubular profile pillars and trusses.

In the coming months, the sports facilities in Milladoiro will undergo this significant upgrade, allowing for increased usage of the courts. This project is expected to benefit sports clubs, municipal sports schools, and the local community.

“With this initiative, we expand the capacity for sports use in an area also designated as a meeting place for youth,” said Blas García, the mayor of Ames. “The roof will reduce dependence on weather conditions and facilitate clubs, municipal sports schools, and users to organise their activities throughout more days of the year.”

Susana Señorís, the councillor for sports, noted that “many outdoor activities are often affected by our weather, so with this roof and improved lighting, usage will significantly increase, especially considering the number of sports and recreational proposals organised by the council.”

She added that “in addition to sports use, the covered courts will host leisure proposals for youth, gatherings, and other municipal activities. The proximity to the Casa de la Cultura, the pavilion, and the swimming pools reinforces this area as a sports hub and a meeting place for people of all ages.”

The local government has approved the tender for this project, which will be executed over two financial years: €371,127.59 for 2026 and €742,255.18 for 2027. Currently, the sports courts in Milladoiro are uncovered and enclosed by walls and fences. The facility consists of two 40x19 metre surfaces and an intermediate seating area, amounting to nearly 2,300 square metres. This upgrade will provide covered protection from rain and sun, allowing for greater year-round sporting activities and creating a new space for youth and community interaction.
