The Paeria has introduced a new edition of the 'walking is health' programme, a community initiative designed to encourage physical activity, healthy habits, and socialisation among residents. This year, the programme includes eight biweekly walks scheduled from September to December in various natural spaces around the city.
The programme runs year-round from October to May, with activities planned on a quarterly basis. Each walk covers approximately five kilometres, with the option to shorten the distance based on the participants' needs. The walks also incorporate complementary physical exercises for warming up and stretching.
Carlos Enjuanes, the deputy mayor and councillor for Social Action and Innovation, noted that this initiative has become well established and is well received by the community. He emphasised, "It promotes health, prevents sedentary behaviour, and creates opportunities for people to connect and improve their emotional wellbeing."
Addressing unwanted loneliness and promoting healthy habits are key objectives of the programme. Enjuanes participated in a session on Friday at the Parque del Agua, where an initial health assessment was conducted for participants. This assessment, which includes physical tests and an emotional questionnaire, is designed to establish a baseline for users, allowing for tailored support throughout the programme. The physical and social assessments will be repeated at the end of the programme to evaluate progress and outcomes.
On average, around sixty individuals of varying ages participate in the walks, which are organised collaboratively by the Councils of Social Action and Innovation, Public Health, and Sports. Several social entities from the city are also involved. The walks take place on Friday mornings, starting at 09:30, and are free of charge. In 2025, over 300 people took part in the various walks offered.
This year's edition commenced in September with a route through the Historic Centre, as part of the Obert del Centro Histórico activities. In October, a walk was held to the Montserrat church in the Vallcalent area, and in addition to the session this Friday, there will be a route to the Castle of Gardeny and the Pifarré farm along the Mariola path later in the month. As is customary, the programme will explore various locations in Lleida, including the Els Magraners neighbourhood, Bordeta, Montcada area, and the Rufea wetlands. The aim is to foster exploration of the territory and enhance social relationships among participants.
