In a significant event for the local artisan community, the first Technical Day for the Update of Definitions and the Production Process of Artisan Trades was inaugurated in Mérida, under the theme "Hands that create, voices that decide." This initiative is promoted by Artesanex in collaboration with the Mérida City Council and the Junta de Extremadura.
Mayor Antonio Rodríguez Osuna underscored the importance of craftsmanship as a "motor of economic activity and income generation," particularly in a tourist city like Mérida, where it also serves as an attraction for visitors to the Extremadura capital. He highlighted the growth of business activity related to craftsmanship in Mérida, which includes shops, associations, and training and leisure initiatives that help to energise this sector.
During his speech, Rodríguez Osuna noted that the City Council actively involves artisans in major events held in the city, organising markets where they can showcase and sell their products. He also pointed out that craftsmanship not only helps to preserve trades and traditions but also meets a growing demand for "exclusive" and handmade products, the result of skills and knowledge passed down through generations.
Moreover, he emphasised that craftsmanship represents an opportunity to generate economic growth and employment, while also contributing to the preservation of traditional trades and the development of new activities linked to training and personal well-being.
In closing, the mayor extended an invitation to artisans from Extremadura to participate in the numerous activities and events organised by the Mérida City Council throughout the year, showcasing their products in the city and becoming part of a programme that regularly features craftsmanship professionals.
