University of Girona inaugurates academic year 2026-2027, celebrating 35 years of excellence

The president of the Diputació de Girona, Miquel Noguer, attended the official inauguration of the 2026-2027 academic year at the University of Girona (UdG), which took place in the Aula Magna Modest Prats. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Mònica Roca, an electronic and communications engineer from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and a prominent figure in the European space sector. Titled "Space, a world full of values," Roca highlighted the potential of scientific and technological research, particularly in the field of space, to address major global challenges and contribute to societal progress.

Prior to the lecture, the rector, Josep Calbó, presented the UdG Medal to his predecessor, Quim Salvi, who served as rector from 2017 to 2025. The event was also attended by Girona's mayor, Lluc Salellas; the Spanish government's subdelegate in Girona, Pere Parramon; the delegate of the Generalitat government in Girona, Xavier Guitart; the second vice president of the Diputació de Girona, Gemma Geis; deputy Bea Esporrín; and the president of the UdG Social Council, Assumpció Vila, among others.

This year's inauguration is particularly significant as the University of Girona commemorates its 35th anniversary, having been established in December 1991. A series of activities will celebrate the university's history and its contributions to the academic, scientific, cultural, social, and economic development of its region. The inauguration ceremony also featured performances by the University of Girona Choir and Orchestra.
