Mayor Abel Caballero revealed that the emergency assistance approved since the beginning of the year has addressed the needs of 6,542 individuals for rent and mortgage payments, as well as food supplies and healthcare. This week, the emergency aid commission approved 48 support packages totalling €21,918. Among these, 21 were designated for housing, amounting to €13,771, which enabled 21 families to pay their rent and avoid eviction. "We have been supporting those in need for some time now, ensuring they can maintain their homes," the mayor emphasised.
Of the total assistance, 24 packages were allocated for food expenses, costing €7,315. Caballero noted that since January, the local government has approved 2,491 aids worth €726,614, which have prevented numerous evictions. "In Vigo, the local government promptly pays the rent for individuals in vulnerable situations or emergencies who request help," he added.
Additionally, the Xunta de Goberno is set to approve a collaboration agreement with the Fundación Santa Cruz for the maintenance of a shelter and dining service, with a total funding of €261,000, equating to €65,000 annually. This agreement allows for the accommodation of individuals in need when the municipal shelter is fully occupied.
The mayor reminded the public that the local government allocates €1,028,000 each year for municipal facilities aimed at homeless individuals, along with €120,000 for the Food Bank. This funding also includes €84,000 for the Misioneras del Silencio, €80,000 for Hogar San José, €51,000 for Vida Digna, €65,000 for Afan, and €10,000 for La Sal de la Tierra. "We are the only city in Galicia that has a municipal shelter for the homeless. We are the only ones doing this," he reiterated.
