Vigo mayor urges regional government to address water emergency

The mayor of Vigo has expressed serious concerns regarding the "extreme and critical" conditions of the Eiras reservoir, which are a direct result of ongoing drought. He has called attention to the lack of measures taken by the Xunta de Galicia, the regional government of Galicia, to address this situation.

During a press conference, the mayor stated, "We are in a state of emergency," emphasising the real risks to water supply in Cangas, Moaña, Redondela, Mos, Vigo, Nigrán, and Baiona. He pointed out that Baiona would be facing severe water shortages if it were not for the supply from Vigo.

Caballero warned that within just over three weeks, it may no longer be possible to guarantee the optimal quality of water. He urged the Xunta to immediately reduce the ecological flow of the Oitavén River and reiterated the urgent need for the construction of a reservoir upstream of the Eiras dam to better manage future drought episodes.

He criticised the Xunta for neglecting the construction of this vital infrastructure, which has been requested by the city council for the past 15 years. "If it had been built, we would not be limiting consumption or asking for responsible use; we would have sufficient water," he asserted.
