Carlos Cuerpo to temporarily lead transport ministry following Óscar Puente's resignation

Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Government of Spain, has confirmed that Carlos Cuerpo, the First Vice President, will temporarily assume the role of Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility following the resignation of Óscar Puente. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic accident in Urda, with Puente stepping down to demonstrate respect for the victims.

During a press conference at the Moncloa Complex, Sánchez highlighted that Puente's resignation was a significant gesture, stating that it reflects the respect the government and society hold for the victims. He remarked, "With his resignation, Óscar helps Spain regain trust not only in our railway system but also in political dignity."

Sánchez praised Puente's dedication over the years, noting his efforts to improve the lives of citizens and his ability to address major challenges with transparency and integrity. He expressed gratitude for Puente's service, stating, "He has worked tirelessly to enhance the mobility of our citizens and has faced significant challenges with dedication."

Looking ahead, Sánchez expressed confidence in Carlos Cuerpo's capabilities, asserting that he will continue the reforms initiated by Puente. He stated, "The Vice President has demonstrated immense management skills and integrity, qualities that our politics and country require."

As Spain approaches general elections on 29 November, Sánchez confirmed that the formal transition of Cuerpo into the ministerial role would be enacted through a Royal Decree published in the Official State Bulletin. He emphasised the government's commitment to supporting those affected by the Urda accident and restoring normalcy in the high-speed rail services.

In his remarks, Sánchez also addressed the current climate of political polarisation, asserting that the government remains committed to defending the interests of the majority and advancing Spain through challenges.
