Consell de Mallorca highlights efforts against illegal tourism in London

The Consell de Mallorca, through its Department of Tourism, has presented recent data on its fight against illegal tourism offerings at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2026 in London. This initiative is part of a strategic effort to promote a more responsible, sustainable tourism model that harmonises the coexistence of residents and visitors.

The President of the Consell de Mallorca emphasised, "This is precisely the great challenge we face: to continue being an internationally recognised destination while doing so in an increasingly responsible and sustainable manner. Our model must create opportunities and prosperity throughout the year and ensure the quality of life for those of us who live in Mallorca. Coexistence between residents and tourists is absolutely non-negotiable."

Galmés also announced, "During this legislative period, we have intensified our fight against illegal offerings like never before. The rules of the game must be the same for everyone. We have a zero-tolerance policy against illegal offerings. This is not just a statement of intent; it is action: we have increased inspections by 130% compared to 2023 and removed over 9,400 illegal listings from major international tourist rental platforms."

From August 2024 to September 2026, a total of 9,472 verified illegal listings were removed in Mallorca. Official data from the technology company Talk and Code, responsible for monitoring and regulatory compliance of short-term rentals, indicates that from January to September 2026, 1,472 illegal listings were removed, equating to 7,881 illegal places no longer advertised on rental platforms. Breakdown by platform shows that Airbnb removed 658 listings, Booking.com 204, Vrbo 593, and Rentalia 17.

One of the priorities for this legislative period remains the fight against illegal tourism offerings. The number of inspections has increased, order has been established, and the number of inspectors and processing staff has been expanded. From January to October 2026, the Consell de Mallorca initiated 198 sanctioning proceedings, resulting in fines totalling €5.9 million.

Regarding the new DIA (declaration of illegal activity) protocol, 76 DIA protocols have been opened, 69 of which have concluded with immediate cessation orders for illegal activities. According to Councillor Ginard, "Our priority is clear: we want illegal tourism offerings to disappear and no longer be available on the market. We cannot allow an activity that does not comply with the law to continue being advertised, marketed, and competing on equal terms with those who meet all requirements. At the Consell de Mallorca, we are convinced that defending legality means protecting residents and ensuring fair competition."

Ginard also highlighted that "the fight against illegal offerings is not just a punitive issue; it is a necessary policy to guarantee legality, protect coexistence, and lend credibility to the change in the tourism model." The Consell de Mallorca aims for a new responsible and sustainable tourism model that generates economic activity and contributes to improving the island and the quality of life for its residents.
