On 10 November, one of the most complex phases of Madrid's urban transformation will begin with the connection of the underground A-5 to the M-30. This operation will involve extensive work to complete the 172 metres of structure that separate the two tunnels. The motorway will be closed from 10 November until 23 December, with traffic diverted to surface routes.
To ease the impact on commuters, the city’s public transport system will be reinforced. Borja Carabante, the city’s delegate for Urbanism, Environment and Mobility, outlined the mobility plan designed to assist residents during this final phase of the A-5 underground project. Public transport is being promoted as the primary alternative for users, while alternative surface routes have been clearly marked for those who need to travel by car.
During this 43-day period, significant earth-moving operations will take place, involving the demolition of structural elements, the installation of 128 beams, sealing and cabling work, and the placement of nearly 500 lights. Additionally, safety installations will be completed, followed by a comprehensive series of tests.
Demolition of the existing ramp
The first major task will involve the removal of the pavement and complete excavation of the existing ramp over the 172 metres where work will occur, located above the future southbound lane towards Madrid. Approximately 7,000 cubic metres of earth will need to be excavated and transported to reach the final level of the tunnel.
Public transport enhancements
From 10 November to 23 December, the tunnel closure will maintain a configuration of two lanes in each direction within the work area. Traffic will primarily flow on surface routes using alternative itineraries. New traffic management will be implemented around Yébenes, Batán, Villagarcía, and Huerta de Castañeda, including new pedestrian routes to ensure urban accessibility and public transport access.
EMT Madrid will deploy a specific reinforcement plan for the bus lines most affected by the new traffic conditions. Between 10 and 26 November, additional services will be concentrated on weekdays for lines 31, 36, 39, 138, and 158, increasing fleet capacity by up to 15.4%. Metro de Madrid will maintain full service on lines 10 and 3. For intercity bus services, routes serving Móstoles, Alcorcón, and Navalcarnero will be reinforced with additional buses as needed.
The city council advises residents to use public transport, avoid driving in the affected areas whenever possible, and plan their journeys in advance using the alternative routes that best suit their needs.
