The Championship of the Canary Islands for 5-metre traditional sailing boats will reach its conclusion on Sunday, 1 November, in the bay of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura. Televisión Canaria, Canarias Play, and rtvc.es will broadcast the final two races of the 35th edition live, starting at 11:00.
A total of 31 boats from Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Graciosa are competing for the regional title. The championship has included up to eight races, with two races held each day on 24 and 25 October, and again on 31 October and 1 November.
The Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela III, helmed by José Pascual Perdomo, currently leads the overall standings with 7 points. On Saturday, the fifth and sixth races took place in light winds, prompting the Race Committee to relocate the race course to the area near the Club Deportivo Herbania. Before heading out to sea, crews observed a minute of silence for the victims of a train accident that occurred earlier in the week in Toledo.
The Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela III won the fifth race after taking the lead during the first downwind leg. Following them were the Tritón and Sofcan Ingenieros, skippered by Orlando Umpiérrez. The second race, which had to be restarted due to a general recall, was won by Jameos del Agua, helmed by Alfredo Morales, with Graciplus and Di Napoli following closely behind.
With these results, the leader holds a nine-point advantage over the Tritón and an eleven-point lead over Playa Blanca. Jameos del Agua and Romerito are tied for fourth place, each with 27 points.
The live broadcast will feature special programming from the bay of Puerto del Rosario, with José Luis Perdomo providing narration, while Alejandro Barrera and Saúl Hormiga will offer technical commentary. Gary Chocho and Eugenia Cantero will follow the fleet from the sea in inflatable boats. Viewers can watch the event on Televisión Canaria's TDT, via Canarias Play, the free RTVC platform available on Android, iOS, and the web, and live on rtvc.es.
This special broadcast reflects RTVC's commitment to promoting traditional sports in the Canary Islands, showcasing the highest regional competition in this nautical discipline. The 35th edition is organised by the Canary Islands Federation of Traditional Sailing Boats, in collaboration with the island federations of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and Gran Canaria. Support comes from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, the Government of the Canary Islands through the General Directorate of Traditional Sports, and the Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario.
The championship is notable for an increase in female crews and young sailors, indicating a generational shift in a sport with a long-standing tradition in the islands. The trophy presentation is scheduled for 17:00 at the Insular Nautical Centre of Puerto del Rosario.
