Carmen Teresa Olmedo, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, has underscored the importance of research, knowledge, and scientific dissemination in understanding and preserving historical and cultural heritage during the V International Congress ‘The Legacy of Rome: Heritage, Territory and Culture in the Mediterranean World’. The congress is taking place in Cuenca from 11 to 13 November, with attendance from local officials, including Cuenca's mayor, Darío Dolz.
During her speech, Olmedo stated, “Researching our past is not just about knowing who we were, but also about understanding who we are and what we want to convey to future generations.” She highlighted the congress as a valuable opportunity for scientific exchange, collaboration among researchers, and sharing of knowledge.
Olmedo commended the individuals and institutions involved in organising the congress, particularly recognising the academic and research contributions of Miguel Ángel Valero, who has a background in university teaching, archaeology, and heritage dissemination.
This fifth edition of the congress broadens its scope to encompass the entire Mediterranean, incorporating perspectives from various regions of the former Roman Empire. It addresses topics such as urban planning, rural landscapes, trade networks, environmental crises, food, health, and the role of women in ancient societies.
Olmedo remarked that “the legacy of Rome remains present in our cities, our languages, our traditions, and many aspects of our daily lives,” emphasising the need for continued interdisciplinary exploration of this heritage.
The congress features presentations, scientific communications, and complementary activities, including visits to Cuenca's historical heritage and the archaeological site of Noheda. Finally, the Deputy Minister highlighted the value of such gatherings in promoting critical thinking, bringing scientific knowledge closer to society, and fostering reflection on the importance of protecting and transmitting cultural heritage to future generations.
